Today I want to talk about the changes we are facing in a global way as a society.I believe that this change while it is more evident today, It recently became known. I'm talking about how the new Information Technologies impact our lifes, internet, the tools for interchange information and comunication are revolutionizing all our areas: music, movies, books, television, newspapaers, telecomunications.
In this new "wave", as Alvin Tofler said in his best-seller book "The third Wave" (Which I recomend), all the society is revolutionizing with this changes and the key in wich I want to put enphasis is the "new economy".
As all we know the classic economic theory is based in the concept of scarcity. In the "new ecnomy" is quite the contrary, It's based in the abundance.
If I share a piece of information in Internet, It can be a music file (mp3), an e-book, a software program, in summary If I share information, the cost of copy them is cero, so If someone copy my mp3 file or software program now we are two people that have the same information and my information don't became older or sufer some degradation, effect that happens in the classic economy.
What happens if we apply this concept in the classic ecnomy?, What happens if we can invent a machine that can copy piceses of bread at cero cost? I think that all the theory framework in which the classic economy is based will break :) and that more than one person won't this happen.
And is in this point in we are, where older structures figth to subsist Y bien es en ese punto en el que estamos, donde viejas estructuras luchan por subsistir with the overwhelming passage of the new. The eternal resistance to change.
But in this new order of things, the bound question is, how can we make money, generate income if the cost of make copies is cero? How can I live in this new economy?.
Business Model in the New Economy
For generate income that make us live in this new scenario the keyword is service!
Inside the Free Software movement, which is one of the main drivers and engines of this new economy, the revenue are made through providing services, develop modifications, mantain the software that user uses, teaching services, and so on. Thi is a new paradigm change, the software isn't being sell in a box as a phisical prodcut instead of that we sell services upon It, adaptations, training, installing, developer hours for modifications.
the slogan of the Free Software movement is: ALL invest a little and ALL take everything.
