Web 3.0: The Smarter Web

We can make a summary of the Web in the following graphic:

Web 1.0
this Web was static, no all the people can publish content. The expansion of the Internet and the maturation of certain technologies (HTML, XML, etc...) made possible this "read only" stage of the Web.

Web 2.0
This second step allow all people to write in the Web (Wikis, Blogs) and share their productions.
This is a Social Web and with an explosion of content never seen.
In this stage rise new tools for communication and innovative sites, read more in: The "Social" Web 2.0 Sites (Matute's Blog).

Web 3.0 - The Semantic Web

What is It? Wich features has It?.

The Web 3.0 will be based in a smarter Web, the users could make searches closer to the natural language, there will be semantic attached to the information and the Web could relate concepts from different sources and could deduce new information from those relations through different rules associated to the content.

The sentence “Semantic Web” make reference to the possibility to use semantic annotations to the content to make basic deductions.

The above paragraph make us think that the Web 3.0 will be another "information search era". The information search will be refined by the specific domain, contextualized and the user experiences will be more friendly.

Some phrases that are related with the Web 3.0:

“I call the 'World Wide Database'” said Nova Spivack.

“We are going from a Web build with connected documents to a Web build with connected data.”

“It is clear that the knowledge is already out there more exposed to the machines than ever" Mr. Hillis.

Related technologies to the Web 3.0

  • RDF:

This model is based on the idea to convert the resource declarations in expression of the form subject-predicate-object (known in RDF as triplets). The subject is the resource, the thing that is being described. The predicate is the property o relation that is being made to the resouce. Last step, the object is the property value or the resouce by which the relation is made. The combination of RDF with other tools such as RDF Schema y OWL allow add meaning to the pages, It's an assesntial part of the Semantic Web.

  • Ontologies:

In Philosophy:
It seeks to describe or posit the basic categories and relationships of being or existence to define entities and types of entities within its framework.

In the Information Science:
The ontology term makes reference to the attempt to build conceptual a schema inside a specific domain, with the goal to facilitate the communication and sharing of information between different systems.
We find this term related to the artificial intelligence and knowledge representation.

  • Artificial Intelligence:

The AI add to this set of technologies the computational processing part to deduce new knowledge from the knowledge base of the different sources.

Basically, the AI takes the rules and relations between concepts as input and deduce new true sentences which make the knowledge base grow.

Sitios Web 3.0

  • Freebase.com:

http://www.freebase.com

The site mision is to become the greatest free global database.
In this site the users define the world by building information items and related them, classifying and sharing them.
We can call this site the "structured wikipedia".

  • Friend of a Friend:

http://www.foaf-project.org/

This site model the relationship between persons, It's like a social network.

  • Wikia Search:

http://search.wikia.com/wiki/Search_Wikia

Search engine ranking the resouces by the users.

Wikia will use the human ranking about a resouce and use this information as Its page-rank algorithm.

Wales (The Wikipedia creator) tells that the human being is better than computers to make an "editorial opinion" about which sites are more relevant for a specific search.

Again, the user has a principal rol in the information organization.
